(And, for that matter, what is a "proscenium" anyway?)  Learn the theatre's secrets, stories, art and architecture and witness its historic restoration efforts with a "balcony to backstage" tour of Tampa's majestic movie palace.  The 90-minute tours kick off in the lobby and includes details about our original Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ.

TAMPA THEATRE  TOUR

Built in 1926, the Tampa Theatre is one of America's most elaborate movie palaces and a beloved community landmak.

Vistors to the Theatre enjoy world-class entertainment under a realistic night sky with twinkling stars, in a romantic Mediterranean courtyard replete with old-world statues, flowers, and gargoyles.

Like other movie palaces around the country, Tamps Theatre was enormously popular when it opened.  For the first time in history, the common person had access to opulence --- for only 25 cents!

But by the 1960's times had changed.  The rise of television and migration to the suburbs had a profound impact on the movie palaces that lit up America's main streets.Audiencees dwindled, coast rose, and many of our nation's finest movie palaces were demolished.

In 1973, Tampa Theatre faced the same fate.  But Tampa's citizen's rallied, community leaders got involved, and a deal was struck for the  City of Tampa to recue the Theatre.

Today, Tampa Theatre is managed by the non-for-profit Tampa Theatre Inc.  As one of the most heavily utilized venues of its kind in the United States, Tampa Theatre's 1,238-seat historic auditorium and 43-seat screening room host nearly 1,000 events each year, including a full schedule of first-run and classic films, concerts, special events, corporate events, tours and educational programs.

Over a century ago, L'Unione Italiana was founded by a small

visionary group who realized that by uniting together, the Italian

community of Tampa could overcome many of the social and economic

challenges that confronted those "turn-of-the-century" immigrants

from Italy.  From those visions came the beautiful building we now

know as the Italian club, which hosts several weddings,corporate 

funcations, non-profit galas, birthdays and celebrations 

throughout the year all within the historic distrist of Tampa Bay.
